“DEATH, DIGNIFIED AND ILLUSTRATED”
The project “Death, Dignified and illustrated” pretends to change the stereotyped and often repetitive image that traditionally has served to illustrate the subject of Death.
By initiative of the DMD group of the city of Figueras (Alt Empordá, Girona), a group of artists from the illustration world has been invited to make their own personal creations about the image of Death. A total of 25 artists have participated in the project , expressing their particular view of a Dignified Death. The original pieces, of free technique, have a DinA3 vertical format over paper.
The project’s art advisor is Alba Falgarona, an illustrator, author of this project’s image.
With this group of illustrations, we want to contribute to demystify and unmask the concept of DEATH. We think that this term, often obscured in our culture, is equally important as the term LIFE.
The exhibit is supported by a proposal of pedagogical work directed mainly to high school students. This educational resource, linked to visiting the exhibit, has been made in an altruistic way by Eduxarxa, a cooperative specialized in content’s creation and educational experiences.
You can consult other didactic proposals linked to philosophy, ethics, social sciences or tutorials created by DMD and published in the magazine “Perspectiva Escolar” number 393 of May/June 2017 in the ‘Education” section of our web page.
The first exhibit sample has been inaugurated on January 12th, 2018 at the ‘Casa Empordá de Figueres’ and will remain open until February 18th. From this date on, the exhibit will alternate among different cities. You can consult at the section ‘Activities calendar’ of our web page.

LETTER TO THE ILLUSTRATORS THAT HAVE COLLABORATED IN THIS PROJECT “DEATH, DIGNIFIED AND ILLUSTRATED” AND HAVE CEDED IN AN ALTRUISTIC WAY ALL THE REPRODUCTION RIGHTS OF THEIR WORK.
“From the DMD association we would like to thank you for giving us this artwork which we consider as masterpieces. The gift you have given us with your illustrations will be a great way to start, wherever this exhibition reaches, the much needed conversation that the dignified death implies. Each one of us, with our doubtless professionalism, with your particular vision of seeing life, expressing feelings and its reality surrounding us, you have stepped forward to change the stereotyped image in which death is represented and to get rid of one of the most painful taboos of our time.
Thank you so much for making this idea, now a project, push forward.
We will keep you informed about the news generated by the exhibition.
Our best regards to each one of you.
