“A LOOK AT THE HISTORY OF THE ASSOCIATION ‘DMD’; THE FIRST YEARS IN DEFENSE OF THE PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO DECIDE UPON THEIR OWN DEATH”

It all started in January of 1984 with an article of Miguel Angel Llerma about the right to die with Dignity, published in ‘El País’.

Two years later, DMD elaborates and distributes its first model of the ‘Living Will’.

In 1993, we started the titanic fight of the tetraplegic Ramon Sampedro for his right to Euthanasia. It was the lawyer, Jorge Arroyo, member of the association, who was in charge of the case.

The catalan law ‘21/2000’ about the information rights concerning health, patient’s autonomy and clinical documentation, was the first one in Spain that gave judicial value to the voluntary manifestations about ‘End of life’. One of the objectives of the association since it’s foundation.

Voluntary Euthanasia (and underline ‘Voluntary’) is, above all, a human right. Right that lies on the context of a secular and pluralist society, where personal different options are respected.

Time has come that the laws should be updated and the destiny to one’s own life granted.
